I like the sound of the stock muffler on the Savage. It's an air cooled bike so you get more engine noise than a Goldwing with a water jacket and 400 lbs of plastic covering the engine, which is probably the source of the "sewing maching" reputation. Try it out. If you like the factory sound, keep it. If you want something louder, buy a aftermarket muffler.
And don't worry about the "farts" (backfires). They are normal for a lean running thumper. Enjoy them, especially at night when you can see the flare out the pipe. Scares the hell out of people behind you. ;-)
